Foróige Citizenship Showcases Sweep the Country!

In every corner of the land the Foróige Citizenship Programme is helping to change the lives of young people and communities - and it’s time to celebrate! 

Regional Showcases of Foróige Citizenship projects are taking place throughout May and we’ve had some recent dispatches from the Foróige team helping shine a light on these fun and vibrant events.

Club Focus: Louisburgh Foróige Club, Co. Mayo

Michael McGuire, Club Leader at Louisburgh Foróige Club has reached out to us to share a photo of their Citizenship celebrations in 1972! How things have changed…though the trophy is still the same, now emblazoned with the names of citizenship winners from the last 40+ years.

Michael says, “Our club currently has 58 of the nicest young people you could ever ask to meet, aged from 12 to 17. We have several nationalities within the club and we are growing year on year.

Young historians at Riverstick Foróige Club involved in Lusitania centenary and donate artefact to local museum

The young historians at Riverstick Foróige Club in Cork have been actively involved in the centenary commemoration of the sinking of the Lusitania which was torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1915. They attended a meeting about the history of the ship and its exploration, hosted by the Blackwater Sub Aqua Search and Rescue team and were then presented with an original piece of the hull of the ship!

1,600 young people, volunteers and staff attended the Foróige Youth Citizenship Awards in partnership with Aldi Ireland on Saturday 24th October at the RDS. The event was a celebration of over 100 #citizenshipchallenge projects carried out by young people throughout Ireland and attendees got to participate in special FX makeup demonstrations, a human-powered scalextrix track, a silent disco, make makey and 3D printing demonstrations, and to have their photo taken with a 7ft dancing robot! The Awards show was MC'd by RTÉ 2FM DJ Ruth Scott. 

Luke Kerrigan (14) organises successful Tractor Run featuring more than 100 tractors #citizenshipchallenge

The winner of our #citizenshipchallenge June prize is Luke Kerrigan (14) in Grange Foróige Club, Co. Sligo. Luke organised a Tractor Run with over 100 tractors, raising €4,245 for a local boy requiring medical treatment for a mitochondrial disease. The phenomenal Foróige member set about organising and advertising the Tractor Run, creating signage, approaching the Gardaí, researching fundraising methods, securing raffle prizes and more. On the day itself, Luke welcomed 109 tractor owners!
